Hello Readers!
Many suspecting visitors witnessed the Total Solar Eclipse on 12th of August this year. It was a truly phenomenal sight, a one of its kind. With use of technology, anyone can easily see the eclipse in real time anywhere without the hazards associated with it.

The totality existed for around 2 minutes and 18 seconds, and it transited through parts of Greenland, Iceland and Spain. The partial eclipse lasted for much longer; around 4 hours or so.

But, what even is a Total Solar Eclipse, and how is it distinct from a Partial Eclipse? How is it formed, and why did ancients deem it dangerous? Let's find out!

A Solar Eclipse

A Solar Eclipse is a specific arrangement of the Sun and the Moon. It is analogous to Lunar Eclipse.
Imagine a line connecting the Sun and the observer on Earth. This line acts as an axis for the Earth's elliptical orbit. When the revolving moon incidentally passes through this axis, it appears as if the moon has obstructed parts of the Sun from the Earth. This event is called Solar Eclipse.

The moon is abysmally small as compared to the Sun, but it just happened to be of size for partial or complete obstruction of the Sun's light here from Earth. Therefore, we possess the royalty to witness something stupendous.

This is also the perfect time. Tidal forces continuously push the moon away at a rate of ~3-4 cm per year. In the far future, even though such conjunctions will occur, it would be impossible for us to see them from our planet.

Types of Eclipses

Partial Eclipses are the times when the moon passes through certain sections of the Sun, while Total Eclipses occur when the moon completely covers the Sun, as seen this year. Total Eclipses are paraxial in nature.

During a Total Solar Eclipse, the moon casts two shadows onto the Earth, namely the Umbra and the Penumbra. Any observer in the Umbra Region (containing the aforementioned line) can witness the Total Eclipse, while they can see a Partial Eclipse in the Penumbra region. The sky is a lot darker in the Umbra than the Penumbra.

From the above photograph, one can see the outer glowing ring of the Sun behind the moon. It is called the Corona, and is normally invisible because of the high intensity glow of the Sun, similar to why stars are not visible during the day.

Predictions

Researchers can predict future eclipses by simulating Earth and moon revolutions and finding conjunctions. Keeping into account the precession (subtle wobbling of the Earth on its axis), they can trace the path of totality. This year, the North Atlantic got the show.
However, this process is heavily limited. There is no accurate way to predict the orbits of any revolving body over long periods of time, particularly because of the physical chaotic nature (Butterfly Effect) and randomness of such orbits and events.

Solar Eclipses present another problem. 
The sun emits all wavelengths of radiation, including Visible Light which we use to see. Another radiation is Ultraviolet (UV), which is invisible because it is just outside our visible spectrum and contains higher energy. Exposure to UV rays can lead to skin burns and cancer.

Every day, some UV rays penetrate the Earth's magnetic field which acts a cover deflecting all rays. In the atmosphere, they collide with the Ozone molecules (O3). The high energy of the rays causes the molecules to break apart into Oxygen molecules (O2) and a free unstable Oxygen atom (O). This process slows the advent of harmful radiation onto the surface.

During the Eclipse, because the moon casts a massive shadow, it effectively blocks most of the rays. Therefore, the photochemical reactions in the atmosphere momentarily slow down. So, UV rays either existing or from the Corona face less hindrance and reach the surface. 

Also during the shadow, our instinct to look away from sources of bright light slow down. Therefore, to completely receive and reconstruct the Eclipse more light is required than normal. Therefore it is not advised to directly watch a Solar Eclipse lest the eyes get damaged.

Sun-Eaters


The Sun was an integral part of worship in any culture for understandable reasons. People had known of gods, but the Sun was the closest they could think of being a supernatural deity.

Ancient Humans were unable to predict Solar Eclipses, and certainly did not know what they were.
It was an unfavourable sight. Imagine being you, and finding that the day had suddenly turned into the blackest night you've ever seen, with only one eerie and dangerous object in the sky.
You had tracked time precisely. It was not nightime, because you could see no stars. No, this was something else, unknown, unpalpable and unforgiving.

People used to think that their gods were angry at them. They interpreted these celestial cycles as harbingers of misery and drought. To this day, Solar Eclipses are used as hyperboles for bad omens. People also imagined that the Sun was under attack. The aliens, either demons or creatures were dubbed Sun-Eaters.
